How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). This hormone begins to increase in your body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

When hCG levels rise high enough to be detected in urine, a pregnancy test can show a positive result. If testing is done too early, however, the hormone may not yet be detectable, leading to a false-negative result.

When to Take a Pregnancy Test

Many people take a pregnancy test after noticing symptoms such as:

  • A missed period
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Tender breasts
  • Fatigue
  • Increased urination

Although these signs can suggest pregnancy, symptoms alone cannot confirm it. Testing a day or two after a missed period typically provides the most accurate result.

If you previously took a home pregnancy test and are unsure about the results, you are welcome to come in for testing at our center.

What Happens After a Positive Test

A pregnancy test confirms pregnancy, but it cannot provide all the information needed to make an educated decision. For example, it does not show how far along the pregnancy is or whether it is progressing normally.

If your test is positive, our team will recommend a limited ultrasound to confirm important pregnancy details.
