An unexpected pregnancy can be challenging enough. When the people you counted on for support begin urging you toward an abortion, it can feel like there is no room left to breathe.

You can love your parents and still arrive at a different conclusion. This is your body and your pregnancy, and the decision is yours.

Keep reading to learn how to recognize pressure at home, prepare for the conversation, and find support nearby.

You can also schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment at Voice of Hope Pregnancy and Family Center first. We’re here for you.

Recognizing the Pressure

Pressure from parents usually arrives in one of two forms.

Direct pressure sounds like an ultimatum. It may involve threats to withdraw financial support, take away your housing, or step out of your life entirely.

If that pressure ever turns physically or verbally abusive, your safety comes first. Leave the situation and call 911. You can also reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE to build a plan that protects you.

Indirect pressure is quieter and harder to name. It can often take the form of passive-aggressive behavior, like the silent treatment, guilt folded into small comments, or a parent pulling back from your life.  Over time, this indirect pressure can wear you down just as much as direct pressure does.

Preparing for the Conversation

Before having a serious conversation about your pregnancy with your parents, gather the facts first. Parents often react out of fear because they do not know the full picture.

A limited ultrasound scan can confirm how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, and if the pregnancy is viable (progressing and has a heartbeat).

Walking into a conversation with your parents with these facts shows you are taking your decision seriously.

Before the conversation, know what you are going to say so you can speak calmly. Write down the two or three points that matter most to you and return to them if the conversation grows heated. A steady voice tends to carry further than a raised one.

If you’re feeling pressured, be sure to state your boundary. Hear their concerns out, then make clear that this choice is yours and that you will not be pushed into a decision you are not at peace with.

Lastly, give them room to process. Your parents are likely feeling the same shock and worry you felt when you first learned you were pregnant. Time can sometimes turn a rough first reaction into support.
